Hot melt adhesive can be said to be a kind of “blockbuster” adhesive that is widely used but rarely known to the public. It is said to be widely used because I can easily find several items around you that contain hot melt adhesive. It is said that it is not well-known because most people do not know that there is such a glue that needs to be heated to become sticky. For the majority of people, hot melt adhesive is truly “both familiar and strange”!
What materials hot melt adhesive can bond has always been a concern for many people. Whether it is out of curiosity about hot melt adhesive or the actual need to use it, it is still necessary to have a simple understanding of it. To clearly know which materials hot melt adhesives can bond, it is necessary to start with the types of hot melt adhesives, because the properties of different types of hot melt adhesives vary, and the performance of bonding with materials is a matter of compatibility. Why do some people feel that the bonding effect is not good when using hot melt adhesive to bond materials? It might be due to the wrong type selection, which leads to incompatibility between the two.
I. Types of Hot Melt Adhesives: (Here, only the material types of hot melt adhesives are discussed.
The material types of hot melt adhesives are mainly classified based on their raw materials and can be divided into: pa hot melt adhesives (with adhesive film and web), pes hot melt adhesives (with adhesive film and web), tpu hot melt adhesives (with adhesive film and web), eva hot melt adhesives (with adhesive film and web), and eaa hot melt adhesives.
Each of the above types of hot melt adhesives can be classified into different models based on melting point, width, thickness or weight per gram, etc. At the same time, their properties also vary:
(1) pa type hot melt adhesive: It features resistance to dry cleaning and water washing, with a low-temperature resistance of minus 40 degrees and a high-temperature resistance of over 120 degrees. Functional pa hot melt adhesive features flame retardancy and resistance to boiling in 100-degree boiling water.
(2) Pes hot melt adhesive: It features resistance to water washing and dry cleaning, can withstand low temperatures of minus 30 degrees Celsius and high temperatures above 120 degrees Celsius, and has high bonding strength.
(3) EVa-based hot melt adhesives: They have slightly poorer resistance to water washing, are not resistant to dry cleaning, have a low melting point, can withstand low temperatures of -20 degrees Celsius and high temperatures of 80 degrees Celsius.
(4) Tpu type hot melt adhesive: It features resistance to water washing but not dry cleaning. It can withstand low temperatures of -20 degrees Celsius and high temperatures of 110 degrees Celsius. It has good tensile properties and is soft.
(5) Eaa type hot melt adhesive: It has good adhesion, strong tensile strength, can withstand temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius, and can be used for drilling.
The above are the relevant characteristics of hot melt adhesives of different materials. Understanding these characteristics is crucial for the selection of hot melt adhesives.
Ii. Application Scope of Hot Melt Adhesive
The materials that hot melt adhesive can bond will definitely exceed what most people think, because the applicable industries of hot melt adhesive basically cover all aspects of our daily life, including clothing, housing and transportation. For example:
(1) The clothes we wear contain hot melt adhesive: the cuffs and collars of shirts, the front of clothes, and the outerwear of leather jackets all need to be bonded with hot melt adhesive.
(2) The shoes we wear contain hot melt adhesive: whether it is leather shoes, sports shoes, canvas shoes, sandals or high heels, hot melt adhesive is needed as the composite adhesive.
(3) Hot melt adhesives are also indispensable in home decoration materials: seamless wall fabrics, curtain fabrics, tablecloths, home textile fabrics, wooden furniture materials, and even doors all require hot melt adhesives for bonding and lamination.
(4) As an important means of transportation for our daily travel, the use of hot melt adhesives in automobiles is even more extensive: interior roof coverings, seat covers, carpet assemblies, damping sound insulation boards, sound insulation cotton, etc. all rely on hot melt adhesive bonding.
The types of materials that hot melt adhesive can bond are far more than those mentioned above. With the continuous advancement of hot melt adhesive production technology, its application scope is constantly expanding!
